One
of the basic premises of osteopathy is that “structure
governs function. The implication of this is that when
the structural alignment of the body goes awry, the function
is compromised. Thus osteopathy is also concerned with
signs and symptoms that an individual may have in addition
to their joint or muscle pain, as the two are frequently
connected.
While people tend to associate osteopathy with”
backs” is that osteopathy can treat any joint or
muscle in the body and can address other health issues
such as headaches, sinusitis, irritable bowel and painful
or heavy periods.
Treatment
itself consists of analysis of an individuals biomechanics,
and points of inefficiency or stress, which are predisposing
the individual to their current complaint. Techniques
to change the function of muscles, connective tissues
and joints are applied to promote healing in the effected
tissues and to change the underlying mechanics. Techniques
are therefore frequently applied to areas of the body
where pain is not directly experienced. Rehabilitation
including Clinical Pilates also plays a major part of
our overall philosophy.
Our resident osteopath sees and treats patients with a
wide variety of conditions both musculoskeletal and visceral.
She has a special interest in jaw mechanics and the treatment
of temporomandibular joint disorders, previous injury
or surgery as a predisposing factor in long term pain
patterns and is also experienced in treating pregnant
and post-natal mothers and babies.
